What’s Your WHY Behind Real Estate Investing?
By Kelly Robertson
Before you find your “Why,” building a business is just… work. It’s a grind. But the second you pin down that purpose? Everything shifts. The work doesn’t just get done; it actually matters.
In our circle, we talk about finding freedom constantly. For some, freedom is the Why. They want to fire their boss, ditch the 9-to-5, or finally stop checking their bank balance before buying groceries.
But for most of us, “freedom” is just the starting line.
The Great “Freedom” Myth
If you jumped into real estate investing to “be free,” I have to ask: Free from what, exactly?
If you can’t answer that in a heartbeat, you haven’t found your Why yet. And that’s okay! But once you do, your whole vibe changes. You wake up with actual fire. You go to bed knowing you moved the needle. You stop “working” and start pursuing.
A recent Forbes piece put it perfectly: “A clear sense of purpose enables you to focus your efforts… compelling you to take risks and push forward regardless of the obstacles.”
Think about that. How would your business explode if you weren’t afraid of the risks anymore? Most people are stuck in a “purpose deficit.” They’re chasing wealth because they think they’re supposed to, but they don’t know what that money is actually for.
So, How Do You Actually Find It?
There’s no magic formula, but if you’re feeling stuck, sit with these four questions:
- What actually lights you up? Think back to the last time you felt like you could take on the world. What got you there? Finding your Why isn’t just about business; it’s about keeping your tank full. If you aren’t taking care of your mental and physical health, you’ll never have the headspace to be inspired.
- What’s your “Sweet Spot”? You’ve probably seen that Venn diagram: what you love, what you’re good at, and what actually pays the bills. Your Why lives right in the middle. If you’re talented at something but you hate doing it, you’re going to burn out. Find the overlap.
- Who are you doing this for? For most of us, our “Why” is actually a “Who.” Is it your kids? Your spouse? A community that needs a win? Working for yourself only gets you so far. But when you’re working for someone else’s future, you don’t quit when things get tough. Those faces keep you in the game.
- What’s the “After” shot? How do you want to leave this place? Maybe it’s building a legacy that your grandkids will point to with pride. Maybe it’s revitalizing a neighborhood that everyone else gave up on. Whatever it is, start building that impact into your business plan today.
